Following the tragic accident suffered by the young wrestler Nik Bali veteran Superstar and Champion Lady wrestler : KLONDYKE KATE airs her views and fears on the dangers involved in todays style of wrestling.

Why would we want to do this to ourselves..........................

I know people aren't going to like what I write here but I have to. I heard tonight about Nik Bali having that awful accident in the ring and is fighting for his mobility after having major surgery. I don't know him personally but he is on my friends list as one of the boys in the wrestling business. I hope with all my heart he has a full recovery.

Years ago, wrestling was more a mat based low impact affair until Rocco and the Dynamite Kid came along and shook it up, changing the face of the UK wrestling scene forever. When I started 33 years ago, there was only a few Promotions in this country and a very few indie promotions and we all knew each other or knew of each other.
Today its a very different bag, there are 100s of small Promotions and only a couple of Major promotions (although in my eyes there is only one major company) and 1,000's of "so called" wrestlers. I cannot believe how easy it now is to call yourself a wrestler and get in the business by paying a couple of quid to someone who probably gets to do 10 jobs a year if they're lucky and teach others to do the same. My God do they not know how dangerous it is to take others lives in their hands not to mention risk their own?? It used to be such a closed shop and you had to really show your worth before anyone would teach you anything and then it was a wrestler who had years of experience, who taught you and they would drag you around like a rag doll and no I'm not kayfabing anything it was bloody hard and they wouldn't let you in, if they thought that you were weak , scared or useless and then no-one took money to train anyone.I have had maybe 10,000 matches in my career and clocked up 10's of 1,000s of miles and you never stop learning, and the minute you think you know it all you're lost.
These kids are learning from kids and trying to run before they can walk learning high impact moves before they can as much as link up properly and it is so wrong. This is by no means a pop at Nik Bali because I certainly don't know him or enough of him to judge him or the people he was working with, but this is happening everywhere and I'm wondering what it will take, before people understand how dangerous it is.Will it be Nik getting paralysed, or a death even? Because I'm sure that will happen too but then it will be too late. This business should be regulated and sadly it never will be because the people that are in it, will not stick together to say you look after us or we walk and Iknow there are plenty of wrestlers to take their places, but it just needs someone to have the balls to say Iwant looking after, not treating like a piece of meat. We put our bodies on the line every day for peanut wages (and thats another subject altogether). I made a conscious decision many years ago that Iwould never put myself or anyone in the kind of danger. I see some of the lads do the most unbelievable moves in the ring and it makes me cringe because I know at the end of the day these wrestlers risk such awful injuries and half don't think about the dangers of what they do to themselves or others.I have tried to make workers understand they do not need to do this kind of highwire shit to be a good wrestler. Safety should always come first and foremost but what would I know eh !!!

I'm so sick of seeing sub standard workers geeing themselves up and thinking they are good wrestlers I often wonder if their brains are functioning properly or do they really believe it of themselves. Please think about what has happened to Nik and think about your own safety and of others. The shows Ithat used to be on , workers thought of the whole show not just themselves and sadly its the other way around now.
Also please no disrespect to anyone but stop telling me God did this and God does that I am a fully blown atheist and whilst I respect your beliefs ,I do not want it ramming down my throat .I just don't want to know. God never seems to be around when I need someone, nor for poor Nik when he landed on his head so please no more God bless you. I don't want to be blessed ,iIjust want my life to be happy without the needs of a supporting crutch!!!

Sorry if this article offends anyone, it isnt there to offend it's my opinion and nothing else.

Please, I hope Nik recovers fully and then I hope he decides wrestling isn't for him and gets 9-5 job because if we had any sense that's exactly what we all would do instead of being Wrestling addicts.
